OG Maco’s Team Denies Death Reports After Apparent Suicide Attempt

Atlanta-raised rapper remains on life support in Los Angeles following hospitalization

On December 12, 2024, Atlanta rapper OG Maco, born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after an apparent suicide attempt. The artist, best known for his hit song “U Guessed It,” was found unresponsive and immediately underwent surgery after being discovered at the scene. Reports have surfaced that a firearm was recovered.

Maco’s manager, Poppa Percccc, confirmed on December 13 that the rapper is still on life support, fighting for his life, and urged fans and supporters to keep the artist in their prayers. “He’s still on life support, still fighting,” said Percccc, adding that Maco is undergoing several tests to monitor brain activity and reduce swelling in his head, in preparation for future procedures. Immediate family members are reportedly the only visitors allowed in the hospital at this time, though updates are still being provided to close friends.

As news of Maco’s hospitalization spread, rumors and false reports claiming his death began circulating online. In response, long-time collaborator and close friend Kino Beats took to social media to express frustration with the misinformation. “All these bch a blogs got something to say but ain’t have no response when we was reaching out,” Kino posted, criticizing the media for spreading false claims without understanding the situation.

Fans of OG Maco quickly took to social media to express support for the rapper, reflecting on the difficult moments he has faced throughout his career. One user tweeted, “Life has been trying to kill OG Maco ever since he got famous. I feel so bad for him,” sharing a series of events that had plagued the artist in recent years. From surviving a major car accident that left him with a permanent eye injury to suffering from a life-threatening skin infection, it’s clear that OG Maco has been through a lot, both personally and professionally. His struggles have been compounded by frustrations over other artists allegedly stealing his style without crediting him, leaving the rapper feeling as though his talents had been taken for granted.

Known for influencing a generation of young rappers, OG Maco was one of the first artists signed to Quality Control, a label that helped launch the careers of stars like Migos, Lil Yachty, and Lil Baby. He has also worked with prominent figures in the industry, including Mac Miller, Doja Cat, and Larry June. Despite facing numerous challenges, including major health scares and setbacks in his career, Maco has remained a respected figure in the music world.

In 2016, OG Maco made headlines after losing an eye in a serious accident, yet he maintained a resilient attitude, sharing his perspective on life and the industry. “I don’t mind. Just remember I never did a thing to you,” he wrote. “To see a world where the do-ers and dreamers are ridiculed more than losers and conformity is worse than missing an eye.”
